In a world whereby duplicating is just crtl c crtl v, where vicious companies have no qualms about wholesale copying products from other companies, She Loves Her Food brings you the case study of Original VS The Fake (aka Duplicate) of one of the world’s most classic junk food – the Rocher.

From the iconic gold foil used to the brown fanned paper stuck to the bottom of the truffle, the similarity is right to the T. Other than the difference in the words “Ferrero Rocher” and “Passion”, most people would mistake Passion for the real thing at first glance. Less observant people would definitely sank their teeth in before realizing their mistake.

However, the bottom of the Passion truffle wrap is brown in color whereas Rocher’s foil remains gold in color all around.

When unwrapped, both truffles looks EXACTLY the same. The only slight difference is that Rocher managed a rounder shape than Passion’s truffle.

The insides of the Rocher is jam packed with thick quality hazelnut cream, bearing a whole hazelnut locked in the middle. When cut open, a welcoming pleasant whiff of hazelnut fragrance saturates the air. The biscuit shell is light and crunchy with bits of crushed hazelnut littered all over. Despite the large amount of hazelnut cream, the taste is not overwhelming. It is more like the taste of falling in love all over again! An amazing creation!

The insides of Passion differs a lot from the Original Rocher. Instead of hazelnut, peanut is used. The inside is rather hollow with very little peanut cream. The biscuit shell is a total failure, with no crunch at all, resulting in a soggy (eww!) bite . Probably due to the use of peanuts, Passion is unable to create a rich luxurious taste of the Rocher, and instead fell flat with a less than average blandness.

Passion had no qualm about it’s blatant rip off of the Rocher’s packaging and appearance. However, it’s taste is something else altogether. Another case of style over substance.

NB: She Loves Her Food recommends readers to fork out that extra few more bucks for the original Rocher (it’s worth it) and avoid Passion at all costs.

Upgraded, consumer friendly and packs more punch than your average crispy noodle junk food. This imported Japanese Crispy Noody snack comes meticulously crunched up and spiced thoroughly for the convenience of the consumer.

With it’s loud and vibrant packaging, it looks just as delicious as the contents are.

Each bite size noodle bit is thoroughly coated with the sweet and spicy spices, allowing the full taste to burst in your mouth. The most addicting part is the crunchness of the bits. Somehow it gives you a nice kick every single time you bite into one. It is really interesting how noodles have evolved and became so good as junk food.

With such high fat count to boot, this crispy noodle is a great addition to the world of junk food!

I never liked the idea of raisin coated chocolates. This was one of those judgemental cases, where the trial never took place. That is until I was forced one into my mouth against my will. And it was pretty good. And so good, I got hooked.

The chocolates are round and small, allowing ease of popping one into your mouth wherever. One point which makes this stand out from the rest is it’s complimenting taste. The milk chocolate carries the mild sweetness of both the cocoa and milk. When combined with the subtle taste of the raisin within, it creates a sweet dreamy taste, just like your first love.

These chocolate also belongs to the non messy category as it doesnt melt right off your fingers. The surface is as squeaky clean and only melts in your mouth when chewed.

Like most true blue junk food, the fat count is about 1/5, containing certain levels of both cholesterol and sodium.

Thus, with it’s amazing taste, chocolate raisins deserves our highest junk food honour,

They always say there is a time and place or everything. KFC is the place to go for hot spicy crispy chicken. You cant just go into any other fast food corner and get the same deal at all. Similarly, to get the ultimate hot & spicy potato chips, there is nothing like Calbee’s!

The potato chips are packaged in a large sized bag (half filled). The colors used on the bag is loud, vibrant and attractive, with delicious images of the potato chips printed on it. It looks almost too sinful to tear open the bag.

Every single slice of potato chip is thoroughly coated with the finger licking spices, bringing your tongue to a new level of sensations. For a non spice tolerant person like yours truly, the amount of spice is just right. The thin slices are extremely light and crispy, bearing uneven “sawing” surfaces.

These quality chips grows on you like fish to water. Simply addictive.

Shaped like a water droplet (but with a flat base), Hershey’s KISSES  is my long time favorite. The whole concept of chocolates as kisses was really original and even to a certain extent, romantic.

Wrapped in little silver foils, the kisses consists of the chocolates & a long flimsy piece of tracing paper material bearing the words KISSES, much like a fortune cookie. For that, the packaging is a top class act.

Chocolate used is milk chocolate. Sweetness is just right, as good as a normal milk chocolate Hershey’s bar can get. Although it can be a hassle to remove the long slip of material off the kisses when u bite into it, i still think it’s pretty cool to have it. Somehow, that makes it stands out from the rest of the foil covered candies.

Taken from the Hershey’s website, it was noted that 1/5 per serving of the kisses contains saturated fat and other small amounts of cholesterol and sodium.

Some of us have probably forgotten about this retro junk food that we were nuts for during our toddler years, but i can assure you, once you pop this delightful  milk ball into your mouth, there is only a sound you will make -  “OOOOHHH” – the sound of memories creeping to the back of your head, slapping your gums for not recognising it earlier.

When the package is torn open, a mild whiff of powdered sweetness floats in the air. Each round milk ball is baked to a perfect crisp, giving the top surface a delicious golden color. Every bite literally melts in your mouth, leaving an extremely sickly sweet after taste.

It’s tiny size ease the chore of popping the milk balls into your mouth, in fact, since the milk balls are supposed baby/toddler junk food, the size is just right.

Amount of fat is sadly <lg. Considering the toddler fact, it is probably more than enough.

Despite it’s lack of fat content, the wonderful and nostalgic taste which reminds us of the peaceful past that we have so conveniently forgotten, deserves an absolute

Blatantly targeting the hearts of kids, Hello Panda is one of the most successful and prominent kid’s snacks in our local market. Banking on it’s decidedly lovely designed mascot and vibrant packaging, Hello Panda also has the contents to match it’s  popularity.

Every meticulous bite sized biscuit comes stamped with a print of the Hello Panda and inside bursting with strawberry icing cream. Although the biscuits are baked to darker brown color and coated with a thin film of oil residue, it’s slightly salted crunch complimented with the sweet icing to a T. The icing was colored a pleasing pink and possess a whiff of tinkering strawberries. Of course the flavouring was artificial, yet it has a sweetness matching the cuteness of the mascot.

Total fat count takes up about 3/10 while saturated fat about 1/10 – looks really good on our junkie chart.

Similar to Pocky, Hello Panda has a open tab for easy tearing, probably for the sake of it’s target audience in mind.

Pocky sticks pack is one of the oldest snacks around that i can clearly remember. It’s distinctive packaging (reminds us of a overiszed cigarette pack)  with the iconic images of the sticks is clever and attractive.

Almost everybody has tried it and seems like a hit with most.  Pocky is more like a “sharing” kind of convenience snack, with it’s cute skinny multiple sticks.

Taste wise, I’d have to admit, Pocky is below average. The chocolate coating on the sticks are too thin, not to mention there is barely any taste of cocoa to begin with. Sweetness of the coating is too artificial and amount of chocolate on each stick varies. The biscuit stick is nothing impressive and some of the sticks were already broken up. To put it bluntly, the taste is cheap.

The above charts that Pocky contains 1/5 of fat – a high scorer on the junkie chart.

Designed and manufactured for the masses with it’s unstoppable powerful branding and packaging, it’s such a pity the contents do not match up at all.

Which is why I got hooked at my first potato chip. The taste was probably something i never had in my life of stalk and leaves. I was careful not be caught savoring these delights by Mother, who deeply believes that potato chips are the incarnate of the devil. But as I grew older, Mother became more involved with work and less particular about what I throw down my throat.

Recently, “Organic” food made a comeback in our family. Not in the form of fresh fruits and hydroponic vegetables as we knew long ago, but as cartoned orange juice, sweet creamy corn soup and – gasp – neatly packaged chocolate biscuits!

Yes, i know, you never knew, neither did i too. What did we know, really. All these french words.

A quick check with google, shows that these biscuits are indeed true blue organic products. So here goes nothing -

The french texts are annoying (English please!) but it makes the whole package seems classier than your average American breakfast cereal box.  Everything else about the carton screams wholesome goodness. The organic part brands itself as being sparkly healthy.

So, why? I admit the idea of organic biscuits, not to mention organic chocolate biscuits intrigued me. The expensive price tag was very persuaive.  I must say I was skeptical about sinking my teeth into the biscuit, with the whole health thing going…until I did. And was i glad i did.

The biscuit  had a thick crumbly snap, which went really well with the velvet melty dark chocolate. Every bite is a luxurious clean, smooth finish. i felt like i was in a 5-star resort with balcony sea view. The biscuit had a richer texture but the generous amount of chocolate balanced the taste to perfection. Bravo!

Whoever said organic = healthy obviously hasn’t ate much. Total fats count is about 1/5, with saturated fats taking up 1/10 of every 100g of Fourres Chocolat. Sexy!

Verdict: Mother is crazy to fork out so much for chocolate biscuits but she sure knows her stuff. Bjorg Fourres Chocolat is a class act, thus

The cookies came packaged in a small dull translucent bag, tied with a twisted wire. The round oily cookies looked common and unimpressive at first glance. However, these lovely butter coins melts into sweet buttery crumbles in your mouth, leaving a slight lingering after taste.

One disappointment is that color of the cookies ranges from almost charred to freshly baked as seen on the image above. The darker cookie tends to be slightly drier while the golden one is sweeter and has more texture.

The cookies tend to be slightly smaller than a 20 cents coin, as shown above. The petite size of the cookies enables me to simply pop one into my mouth without the usual unsightly bite (with crumbs falling off the side of the mouth). Perfect for outside consumption!

Due to lack of nutritional information on the packaging, myfitnesspal.com indicated -

Verdict: These little sinful delights are way too addictive and the small packaging is not enough for one sitting. No wonder mother didn’t hesitate to snapped up 3 packets of these addictive cookies.
